2. Our Land
Transition Design / Design Research
London, 2023.
This study examines how design can be utilised to enhance soil biodiversity within the context of the Anthropocene. Despite its critical role in maintaining ecosystem health, soil biodiversity has received comparatively little attention in contrast to aboveground biodiversity. Moreover, the potential of design as a transformative tool within this domain remains largely underexplored.
To address this gap, the research adopts an interdisciplinary approach that integrates design and soil science. Drawing on both Transition Design and Participatory Action Research methodologies, the project combines speculative and community-centered strategies. The ultimate aim is to develop sustainable, design-driven interventions that support and revitalize soil biodiversity in response to ecological degradation.
